Caroline Miller asked:

Exotic birds are among the most popular pets to keep. Not only are they absolutely beautiful, with their brilliantly colored feathers, many pet owners find them easier to take care of than, say, a fuzzy cat or a rowdy dog. However, choosing among the best exotic pet birds is rather confusing because there are several species to choose from. Here are some of the most popular exotic pet:

Sun Conures these birds are popular among the medium-sized variety. They grow to about 12 inches in length, requiring less living space than large parrots. The feathers of Sun Conures are tinted with brilliant hues of orange, yellow, red, green, and blue. Like parrots, Sun Conures can learn how to speak, however they can become quite vocal and noisy. They scream and screech and may not be ideal for those living in apartments buildings. Sun Conures usually live to around 20 to 35 years.

African Grays these birds are considered to be among the most loquacious among exotic birds, they can acquire a vocabulary of up to 2,000 words. These birds are also rather intelligent, but they can get demanding and easily bored. However, African Greys can also be quite affectionate - perfect for owners who want sensible companions. They may live from 50 to 70 years.

Budgerigars these are the most common among the pet birds and serve as good introduction to owning feathered pets. Budgies can be good pets for children and are quite attractive with a great variety of colors. They also require a relatively small space, while being quite easy to maintain. Though they can typically learn only few words, they are intelligent enough to be able to sing and whistle tunes. Budgerigars may live from 12 to 14 years.

Parrotlets these are among the smallest varieties of parrots. While parrotlets may be feisty they are quite intelligent just like their giant cousins. Parrotlets are also rather quiet compared to other exotic birds and thus they are ideal for owners who live in apartments or duplexes. The average parrotlet grows only to about 5 inches and lives to about 20 years.

Cockatiels many find the medium-sized cockatiel as delightful pets. They also belong to the parrot family, and are known to be intelligent. Cockatiels usually just whistle or mimic random sounds, but they can also learn how to talk. They come in different combinations of color and can be quite attractive members of a home. Cockatiels usually live from 15 to 20 years.

There are many more exotic pet birds and it is best to consult with a breeder to find the best one for you.

You know why you book a package holiday to Tenerife: the sun! The sea! The sand! The clubs! But between the nights on the dancefloor and the days on the sand, there’s plenty of room for checking out some of Tenerife’s attractions, as long as you know where to look. Fortunately I’ve made it easier for you by listing my 5 favourite things to do in Tenerife:

Park Las Aquilas Jungle Park

The Jungle Park really is a must for any package holiday in Tenerife. Set high in the hills within 75,000 square metres of tropical gardens, this is a wildlife park that will intrigue and entertain people of all ages. There is a good selection of animals as you’d expect in any zoo, but the park is especially recommended for fans of big cats, penguins and exotic birds of prey (the flying eagle demonstration is a must-see, but they mean it when they say you shouldn’t bring food in!) There are plenty of activities for kids (and big kids) and with a wide selection of lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars, big cat lovers will be in heaven!

Parque Nacional Las Canadas del Teide

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Tenerife is the Volcanic Mount Teide. Not one if you’re nursing a hangover, but for everyone else this is an absolute must-see. The views from the mountain are simply breathtaking, and you get a fantastic look at the island which you will never forget. It’s wise to get there early as this is one of the big attractions of Tenerife - if you want to head all the way to the top you’ll need to wrap up warmly - and be sure to bring your camera!

Golf del Sur

If you’re a fan of golf, then a stay at the Golf del Sur resort should be a definite on your Tenerife package holiday itinerary. The resort offers very little to do other than play golf - but if you love the game this won’t be a problem. Of the courses available, my pick is Playa Del Americas, with Golf del Sur getting a special mention for its tranquil feel. Within easy reach you’ll also find Amirilla and Adeje - both of which offer an entertaining round of golf. If the sport’s your thing, feel free to ignore the other things to do in Tenerife and make this your sole focus!

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

It would be a shame to be so close to the country’s warm, clear blue oceans and not see the life teeming just underneath the surface - fortunately, there are plenty of places available to make this dream a reality, and it’s well worth taking advantage of the nearby coral reefs that make for an unforgettable diving experience. Once you’ve undertaken some training and gotten kitted out, you will be able to see all kinds of sea life from starfish and crabs to rays and other tropical fish enjoying their natural habitat. This is one of the best things to do in Tenerife and should not be missed!

Loro Parque

Yep, another wildlife park - Tenerife has many of these and putting only 2 in the top 5 was quite a struggle! Loro Parque is the pick though purely for its size, scale, variety and the sense that it’s worth visiting the country for! The park seems to put animal welfare as its number one priority, and the animals are simultaneously happy and entertaining as a result. There are a number of fantastic shows (the whales in particular are an absolute must-see) and you can expect to see turtles, sharks, flamingos, penguins, tigers - everything you could want. The park is home to the biggest parrot collection in the world (and the original purpose of the attraction!), so be sure to get plenty of photos of these amazing colourful birds.

There’s so many attractions in Tenerife that it’d be a shame to just stick to the beach and the clubs - although I wouldn’t blame you if you did, superb as they are. Just consider they above options when you touch down for your package holiday in Tenerife!

On a question I posted about a policy requirement I’m working on regarding training people and requiring classes on care and behavior on large exotic birds before purchase, a woman stated that she didn’t know that there was a problem with large exotics being abused. I know of SEVERAL cases where well meaning people purchased birds but never had the tools to learn about their species to take care of them.

My question to you is what’s the worst abuse story you know about for the larger exotic species and do you think it’s a problem?

(I do think it’s a problem, hence the reason I’m working on ways to help with the problem.)

Jess Shaw asked:

If you are lucky enough to have a cherry tree in your yard, I am sure I don’t need to tell you how much enjoyment can come from them. Just eating the delicious cherries that spawned from your tree is a rewarding experience in itself. Looking out your back window and seeing a magnificent, glorious cherry tree is also rewarding. Most people are impressed just by the fact that you have a cherry tree, because they are usually thought of by non-gardeners as some sort of exotic plant.

But along with the joys that a cherry tree can bring, there are many annoyances. They seem to attract more unwanted creatures than any other plant in the world. Almost every day it seems like there is a new type of pestilence swarming the tree, trying to get a nibble of its delicious fruits. I can’t say I blame them, but if they want to eat delicious fruits then they should grow their own trees.

One of the main and most constant problems that most people deal with is birds eating the fruit off the tree. It can seem almost impossible to get rid of this pest. After all, they can come in from any angle and make a quick getaway with the cherries. Or they can sit undetected in the branches and munch away all day. A bird certainly has its versatility on its side. Those little guys can be a real hassle to catch or repel. However, there are several different ways you can deter the birds from your house.

The most used way of repelling birds is to place a plastic owl within the vicinity of the house. If you find any animal that usually eats birds and purchase a plastic version, usually real birds will be instinctual enough to avoid it. These can include snakes, owls hawks, or scarecrows (OK, maybe they don’t eat birds normally. But they sure scare the birds for some reason). Most of the time you can purchase these at your local gardening store. If you want a different version or a more lifelike representation, if you look online then you’re sure to find something that will work.

If you get a plastic animal of some sort, usually it will cure the bird problem for a while. However, some birds are just really brave (or really stupid) and will continue to eat from your tree. Almost any reflective surface or noisy object will prevent the birds from coming too close. I personally like to use reflective tape designed for scaring birds. You can purchase this at any gardening store. I usually use this in combination with a large assortment of wind chimes for maximum scaring. Once you have a plastic animal along with reflective items and noisy items, almost all birds will be too terrified to even go close.

While airborne creatures might take a little more than their share of fruit, you should still consider leaving one tree exclusively for them. While they might seem like a pest sometimes, birds can be the one thing that livens up your garden. If you’re used to having birds and then all of a sudden you’ve scared them all away, you’ll feel like there is something missing from your yard. Something that, on the inside, you truly loved all along.
