If you are looking for an amazing African vacation try a Botswana Safari Holiday. The wildlife and landscape of this African country are simply awe inspiring. Watching wildlife safari on The Discovery Channel or on National Geographic is one thing, nice but ho hum. Seeing it with your own eyes, smelling it and hearing it in person is the ultimate travel experience.

There are many provinces in Africa where you can safari and take tours. The Botswana area is less overrun by tourists and gives a person much more freedom to explore on their own (or get in trouble if not careful). If you’re looking for ultimate in adventure, I recommend Botswana Safari Holidays, you will love it.

Botswana Hotels

Tourism is one of Botswana’s main economic industries and the government has been working to improve services. Quality hotel chains now have offerings in Botswana so that only the safari needs to be long, hot & dusty while accommodations can be clean and comfy. Many Botswana hotels have been built into the natural surroundings to bring the wildlife and scenery close adding to your holiday experience.

Let’s explore some of the best Botswana Safari Locations

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is the largest inland delta in the world. The area’s waterways pass through the Kalahari Desert without flowing into the sea and irrigate the richly growing land creating a mosaic of palm islands. These islands are overgrown with lush grass and a variety of flora. While touring the Okavango Delta you might stumble upon any number of exotic birds and mammals, including elephant, buffalo, and giraffe. The Delta offers spectacular photo opportunities.

Moremi Reserve

Located in the heart of the Okavango Delta the Moremi Reserve bears the name of Chief Moremi of the BaTawana tribe. This reserve is regarded as one of the most beautiful on the entire African continent. At the Moremi Reserve you can get up close and personal with a huge variety of wildlife.

Xakanaxa Lagoon

The Xakanaxa Lagoon is right in the heart of Moremi and is known for its large herds of antelope, along with wild dogs and leopard. There is lodging available right on the lagoon for added interest and excitement. You can choose to “camp” according to your luxury expectations and your budget. There are several different private camps set-up along the edge of Xakanaxa. “Chiefs Safari Camp” and “Camp Moremi” are integrated into landscape in such a fashion that you can stay within the safety of the camp while still observing wild game in action.

Desert

If you go to Botswana during animal migration season – between March and May, you can hire a 4×4 and take it into the desert for some real safari sightseeing. There is no lodging in the desert, so you would be wilderness camping and sleeping underneath the stars. This can be amazing fun and very dangerous. Do not underestimate the desert. Sufficient supplies and a guide are a must. Hyena, jackal, antelope, lion, snakes and i countless species of birds and reptiles live in the desert. There is something to see any time of the year. Wisdom and caution are a must no matter when you go into the desert.

Safari in Botswana on the Cheap

Adventure travel packages are not the cheapest of holidays - often costing $4500 or more. This is the way to go for some people especially if your pockets are deep. However if you don’t like spending money there are less expensive ways. For a cheap Botswana Safari holiday, book nothing but the flight to Botswana. Then rent your 4×4 when you arrive. Do some studying before you go so that you will be able to book what you want to do and where you want to go when you arrive. It will be more adventurous than having everything prearranged. Although maybe a little more stressful if you are someone who likes to know everything is taken care of. You have more freedom to roam and enjoy the sights since you’re not stuck with someone else’s schedule. It’s easy to stay at a camp in Botswana and arrangements can be made on the spot, in person. If you travel this way, you’ll get your Botswana Safari trip for much less money, saving about 50% of an otherwise high cost adventure.

Sharon Elrod asked:

A fascinatingly beautiful bird and its cousin can be found in Central and South America. We’re talking about the Blue and Black-faced Dacnis. They are members of the tanager family. The Black-faced Dacnis lineata and the Blue Dacnis cayana are small passerine birds (12 ½ cm long and weighing about 13 grams). More than half of all bird species, passerines are known as perching birds, and sometimes also as songbirds.

A word first about the Tanager family of birds. There are about 240 species of Tanagers living primarily in Central and South America. A few are migratory and get as far north as North America. They are all fairly brightly colored, although a few species are black and white. Many of the species live in the same areas but their different eating habits eliminate competition. For example, some of them eat insects off leaves; others catch them flying through the air. In temperate climates, the breeding season is March through June. In South America, it is September and October.

The genus, Dacnis, includes several species with common names identifying them primarily by color:

White-bellied Dacnis, Dacnis albiventris

Black-faced Dacnis, Dacnis lineata

Yellow-bellied Dacnis, Dacnis flaviventer

Black-legged Dacnis, Dacnis nigripes

Scarlet-thighed Dacnis, Dacnis venusta

Blue Dacnis, Dacnis cayana

Viridian Dacnis, Dacnis viguieri

Scarlet-breasted Dacnis, Dacnis berlepschi

The Blue Dacnis is also called the Turquoise Honeycreeper. It is a small tanager, a beautiful turquoise-blue colored body with black around its eyes, forehead, throat and upper back. Their wings are black-edged with turquoise in the center. That’s the male, that is. Females are lighter blue, almost green, with a turquoise head; their bellies are paler green; wings are brown with green edges. They almost look like two different birds. Most honeycreepers have long bills, but these little guys’ bills are relatively short.

The Black-faced Dacnis is distinguished with black around its eyes and continuing along its neck and the top of its wings. The identifying turquoise color of the Blue Dacnis becomes less green and more blue in the Black-faced bird. It habits are almost identical to that of its cousin, the Blue Dacnis.

These birds are social creatures, found mostly in pairs or as part of a mixed family high in the rainforest. They feed on fruit and insects which they find on canopy leaves. Their nests are built in trees hidden by dense vegetation and resemble a round bulky cup. Females normally lay two brown and white eggs and they incubate them. Males do the feeding for females during incubation.

Although this species enjoys an ‘of least concern’ rating on the endangered species list, its home is primarily the rainforest that is being lost at the rate of thousands of acres every day. We should be concerned.

Dalvin Rumsey asked:

The grey parrots may have many behavioral problems and most of them are caused by the human’s lack of understanding that it is first of all a prey bird and has little to do with a life in captivity. Many people fail to understand that and won’t allow that bird to manifest like a bird.

The grey parrots are exotic birds and come from strange lands. As strange as we find those lands, the same is for the parrots. They are not accustomed with the habits, the language or any other form of communication. A person should accept the parrot because the parrot also tries to understand the human behavior and tries to understand and live in peace with the human being.

Grey parrots caught in the wild are not aggressive when they are in a pair or breeding. They feel fear, which is justified, when they feel the presence of a human being, but they don’t have violent reactions. Usually, they share food, they play and they interact in a non – violent manner. Strangely, the grey parrots who act more violently while breeding or in pairs are the domestic ones.

The domestic grey parrots have a few reasons to become aggressive:

* They loose the respect and consideration for themselves when they are in captivity.

* They loose the desire to live safe.

* They are affected by human aggression because avian species knows that pain or aggression mean death. Those animals are not used to touches, pokes, pushes, chasing, shaking or striking. Those actions are frightening and dangerous for the parrots.

* Their self confidence, their trust and their comfort are shattered if they are intimidated. Standing over them, or staring at them may have a strong impact on the birds.

* A grey parrot will never trust a person who tries to dominate him or control small aspects of the nature.

* Just as any human being, a grey parrot won’t trust a person who uses sensory deprivation as a mean of punishment for misbehavior.

A comparison between a wild animal and a domestic one would fail from the beginning in every way especially when it comes to birds, which are usually predators. Genetic inheritance eradication would require thousands of generations of selective breeding to obtain a domestic bird like a grey parrot and it is not always possible.

A bird that becomes stressed will start self mutilating or biting or will develop phobias. There are many factors that could induce stress to a bird. When it comes to grey parrots, a person should know what actions stress the bird and try to avoid them in order to keep the trust of the pet.

The grey parrots are intelligent and sensitive birds and they have the tendency to find in the human caregiver the qualities of a teacher, parental figure and mentor. They get attached to their caregiver and expect to be treated with respect and compassion. This is a method that works as well for birds as it does for humans or dogs.

For a perfect blend of science, adventure, and hands-on learning, Costa Rica is an excellent destination for student group travelers. A republic in Central America, Costa Rica (literally “Rich Coast”) is bordered by Nicaragua, Panama, the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. The destination is divided into 20 natural parks, eight biological reserves, and a series of protected areas that will expand the regular science curriculum far beyond the walls of the classroom.

Outdoor activities include horseback riding, hiking, and guided bird-watching tours. While Costa Rica is has only about 0.1% of the world’s landmass, it contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity, with nearly a quarter of the country composed of protected forests and reserves.

The internationally-known Corcovado National Park is famous among ecologists for its biodiversity and is home to an abundance of wildlife. Students experience the park with horseback riding, expeditions to the Guayami Indigenous Reserve, and bird watching. Boat tours provide views of marine birds and dolphins. Corcovado is the last remaining large tract of lowland rain forest o the Pacific coast of Central America. Howler and spider monkeys, tapirs, anteaters, crocodiles, bull sharks, and exotic birds are just a few of the park’s inhabitants, along with a huge variety of tropical plant life.

Home to 320 species of birds, Tortuguero National Park is mostly recognized for its annual nesting of endangered green turtles and is considered the most important nesting site for this species. The park is also home to spider, howler, and white-throated Capuchin monkeys, the three-toed sloth, and the endangered manatee. The best way to see most of the park is from a boat. Evening guided tours enable students to visit the beachfront and see the Green Sea turtles nesting under the moon. During the tours, students can watch as the turtles struggle up the beach, dig their nests, and lay their eggs.

A walk through a Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve reveals a lush green garden of mosses, ferns, and flowers growing thickly on every tree. Clouds drift and settle among the slopes, providing moisture for the amazing plant growth. Wildlife includes the jaguar, three-wattled bellbird, and the famous and elusive Resplendent Quetzal. Of the 1,400 types of Costa Rica Orchids, 500 of them are found at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Students may enjoy a canopy tour of a cloud forest’s protected area, or explore the area by suspension bridges. Aerial tram tours travel through the treetops, where an incredible diversity of plants and animals can be seen. For a more rustic mode of travel, students may strap on mountain climbing harnesses and pull themselves along suspended cables to a series of wooden platforms built in the trees.

Highlights at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve include butterfly gardens, reptile and amphibian exhibitions, hummingbird gardens, and a visit to an orchid garden. Night tours feature beautiful sunsets and a naturalist guide who explains the many unique elements of the forest and its inhabitants.

In addition to rain forests, Costa Rica is a land of volcanoes, waterfalls, and rivers. One of the most popular ways to explore its waterways is snorkeling. Here, students get in touch with the colorful underwater world where eels, lobsters, schools of fish, and the spectacular whale shark make their home. This is also a great time to try out the new sport of “Canyoning,” the exciting adventure of repelling down waterfalls. If that’s too adventurous, students can take a relaxing dip in volcano-heated waters after a hike on the active Arenal Volcano.

The capital city of San Jose is an open gateway to the country’s many interesting destinations. Costa Rica’s National Museum, located in the ancient Bellavista Fort, is the guardian of the country’s precious treasures and cultural heritage. The Jade Museum presents a number of important archaeological pieces, in addition to jade pieces and pottery. Presenting the rich culture of Costa Rica, Central Market is the city’s colorful marketplace. Within the cozy warren of alleyways, students discover flowers, baskets, spices, fresh goods, and souvenirs. At the nearby Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, visitors view more than 2,000 glittering pre-Colombian gold artifacts.

Express your love for birds uniquely through glass bird feeders. The artful designs done on glass feeders are sure to make your bird cage, porch, or garden a little more interesting and lively. The intricate designs, placed around the feeders so that you can view the patterns from any standpoint, will surely give a sense of authenticity to your enthusiasm for birds.

Glass is steadily becoming the material of choice for bird feeders. Glass can offer greater flexibility in terms of design patterns. Glass artwork can give your feeders exotic finishes limited only by an artists or your imagination. More importantly, glass feeder designs are reputed to be more resistant to scratches, rusting, or flaking off.

Adding glass bird feeders as accent pieces to your garden is one sure way to elevate your enjoyment for birds, be it wild. However, as glass feeders can definitely increase the level of activity for birds in your area, they may be a little bit delicate to clean. So read on for a few pointers on how to have easier time sprucing up your glass feeder.

Bleach And Water

Cleaning up a glass bird feeder should be fast and easy when you use bleach and water. Bleach can effectively eliminate molds and other unwanted microscopic organisms. With the rise of various avian diseases that can be contagious to humans, keeping glass feeders clean down to sub-atomic levels can be the best preventive measure for bird enthusiasts to avoid catching bird related diseases like the bird flu.

By adding bleach, a standard disinfectant, to water, you can be sure that your glass feeders are not only visibly clean, but pathogenically safe as well.

However, bleach is not so good on the smell. In fact, household bleach can cause allergies to some people. To prevent allergic reactions or stop the disturbing odor, the measure of the bleach mixture must be in the ratio of ten parts of water to only one part of bleach. This solution is enough for an effective yet smell-free cleaning.

For people who are really allergic to bleach smell, letting the feeders air dry or, better yet, applying a coating of sugar extract on the feeders can surely suppress the violent smell of bleach.

And, of course, you want to be sure to rinse off any bleach residue so you do not poison your birds with it!

Two Glass Bird Feeders Are Better Than One

Having two feeders for each spot you want to put feeders on can surely cut your cleaning chores into just a few seconds. Use one bird feeder for a couple of days then replace it with the other one. To clean the first one you used, soak it in bleach and water solution. Alternately using two bird feeders and switching them regularly shortens your cleaning and handling time without the rush that could make you break your glass feeders.

Use A Cleaning Mop Or Brush

A feeder cleaning mop or brush can be a very effective tool for cleaning bird feeders. Basically a cleaning mop or brush is made up of a lump of foam or bristles fastened on one end of a ten or twelve-inch wire or rod. Glass bird feeders, particularly those made by blowing glass, have intricate designs and forms; hence you need a cleaning mop or brush to definitely reach and clean the lowermost and innermost parts of a glass feeder.

Sure, a bleach solution can effectively clean your bird feeder; but when you are unable to scrape off stubborn slime building up on the bottom of the feeder, molds and other undesirable organisms will eventually attach themselves and grow inside the feeder. A cleaning mop or brush can often last a year, at the very least.

Nothing Beats Hot Water

Some bird enthusiasts disagree with using bleach and water solution in cleaning glass bird feeds. They argue that, unlike most humans, birds have a more sensitive sense of smell. Any amount of bleach left on the feeder, no matter how small, can drastically affect the birds.

So instead of bleach, enthusiasts who avoid using bleach swear by the effectiveness of plain hot water and good old brushing. They reason that hot water can do the job of killing unwanted organisms while brushing can scrape off molds and other stains.

So there you have it, make a statement for all the bird lovers out there by using glass bird feeders. Unlike common feeders, glass feeders have unique design patterns. Above all, remember to keep your bird feeders clean.

my mom saw this tv program about an exotic bird form New Guinea…. and she doesnt remember the name. I have no picture so, i will try to describe it..

(acording to my mom’s description) it has all colors, and a kind of a yellowish chest. when it “dances” ( when trying to find a parter) the male does something with his wings to make it look as if he has a “skirt”. before he “dances”, he clears the ground of the forest( like, no leafs, no sticks..) and if there is a stick or trunk which he cannot move, he “polishes” it.

if any bird expert has any idea of the name of this bird, i would really appreciate it. thanks ;)
