Sylvia Guarino asked:

Arriving home, I am thankful for the beauty of where we live year round and even more appreciative of our Sanibel retreat.

Although I have traveled to many continents and found beauty on them all, Sanibel and Captiva are iconic of America in their particular brand of beauty. The preservation of these islands despite the over-development of most of Florida and much of the USA is something worth evaluating as well as appreciating.

Among barrier islands, Sanibel and Captiva are unique. Their natural features, together with a climate that is subtropical in summer and temperate in winter, create unparalleled habitat for a diversity of birds, reptiles, mammals and aquatic life.

Sanibel is Southwest Florida’s only barrier island with a significant southern exposure. It formed from a lobe extending from Captiva. Along its south-facing shores, the currents of the Gulf of Mexico deposit countless shells with every tide. Sanibel is also Southwest Florida’s only remaining double-barrier island, in which two major sets of ridges catch rains to produce an extensive system of interior freshwater. Just beneath the surface, a rain-fed freshwater lens protects the interior wetlands from saltwater intrusion.

Vegetation is luxuriant. On the ridges, cabbage palm, strangler fig, gumbo limbo, wax myrtle, wild coffee and a host of indigenous shrubs and trees flourish. In the lower swales, sawgrass, spartina grass, leather ferns, sedges and purslanes dominate.

Captiva, with a high backbone of a ridge and rich with tropical growth, is the older of the two islands. Much of Sanibel was farmed in the 1880’s with crops of peppers, tomatoes, citrus, squash and melons. Forty families had settled the islands by 1890. Salty soil, as a result of storm overwashes, caused a shift to more saline-tolerant citrus by the 1920’s.

But the natural beauty of Sanibel and Captiva could have easily been lost or severely compromised were it not for a vision and commitment on the part of those entrusted with their care.

After months of public meetings in 1995 and 1996, the citizens of Sanibel reaffirmed their commitment to preservation of natural resources by adopting a vision statement that, in part, follows:

Sanibel is and shall remain a barrier island sanctuary, one in which a diverse population lives in harmony with the island’s wildlife and natural habitats. The Sanibel community must be vigilant in the protection and enhancement of its sanctuary characteristics.

The City of Sanibel will resist pressures to accommodate increased development and redevelopment that are inconsistent with the Sanibel Plan, including the vision statement. The City will guard against and, where advisable, oppose human activities in other jurisdictions that might harm the island’s sensitive habitats, including the island’s surrounding aquatic ecosystems.

Sanibel is and shall remain a small town community whose members choose to live in harmony with one another and with nature, creating a human settlement distinguished by its diversity, beauty, uniqueness, character and stewardship. The Sanibel community recognizes that its attractiveness to visitors is due to the islands quality as sanctuary and as community. The City of Sanibel will welcome visitors who are drawn by, and respectful of, these qualities; it will resist pressures to accommodate visitor attractions and activities that compromise these qualities.

Where I live is quite lovely. Where I play is even lovlier. The difference is in the intent as well as content. And both, in different ways, reflect ideals in American beauty. The former has created an emphasis on the manmade and the second has as its purpose conserving what God has created. I feel very fortunate to call both environments “home”.

Singapore is known for its skyline. Modern skyscrapers line the skyline of the island. But that is not all; you will be surprised at the green area that Singapore has managed to keep despite the modern look of the city.

Central nature reserve is one of the examples of the commitment of the island to preserve greenery at all costs. Part of the tropical rainforest extending from Thailand through Malaysia and Indonesia Singapore has done its bit to preserve the natural ecosystem of the planet. Singapore is one of the two cities on the earth that boast of primary rain forest. This rain forest is undisturbed by man and has served as water catchment area for four reservoirs for over 150 years. Covering an area of 2000 square hectares it is one of the most spectacular green areas in the island.

This unique piece of forest is managed by National parks board. The board is run with the help of urban planner and trained biologists. This jungle undisturbed by man is natural habitat to diverse fauna and flora. Many native birds find refuge in this forest. Jungle is home to a variety of fruit and herbs and shrubs. Fruits include banana, fig and tapioca. Herbs include ginger, vanilla and cinnamon plants.

Another welcome surprise you will get in the jungle is the variety of birds you get to watch. Exotic birds include racket tailed drongo, whistling bulbul, the black naped oriole, kingfisher along with woodpecker. One may also come across kingfisher and bitterns. Along with these birds you will see long tailed monkey now and then in the jungle. Feeding these monkeys is crime and those found guilty are served heavy fine.

Another natural wildlife reserve in the island that deserves attention is Singapore Zoo. It is reputed to be one of the better zoos in the world and you will encounter animals in their natural habitat. You will be surprised to see the animals as they are quite healthy and natural.

Another way to make the visit to Singapore memorable is by going for a night Safari. In the night Safari one can walk down the safari park or enjoy the comforts of a tram. The safari has been divided into eight different zonal segments. In the course of safari you will come across 130 varieties of animals. If you want to have a closer look at the animals go for the tram ride.

Another natural wonder in the island is Santosa Island. It is store house of exotic fauna and flora of the island and must see for all the nature lovers. Santosa Island has some of the best resorts in the island and stay in any of the cheap Singapore hotel there will enhance your encounter with the nature.

Stories of political unrest, hurricanes, and not-so-tourist-friendly areas have a way of scaring people away from visiting Central America come vacation time. However, you’d be wise to investigate the situation for yourself before crossing Costa Rica off your list. This beautiful, surprisingly quiet and peaceful country has all the qualities that make for an exotic and relaxing trip, so consider this oasis for your next holiday if you’re in the mood for something different yet delightful.

Costa Rica has miles of coastline to take advantage of, so if you want to surf, snorkel, or just laze on the beach you won’t have to look too far. Along this line of thinking, some consider Nicoya Peninsula to be the most beautiful spot in the country. Popular beaches border a tropical yet dry rainforest where agricultural and ranching developments are also found. Fun mixes with authentic terrain here, and you’ll find that the result is almost overwhelming.

Wildlife preserves and parks will acquaint you with Costa Rica’s focus on conserving precious flora and fauna, and you’ll have the chance to catch sight of the world’s largest species of turtle. Northeast of Nicoya are some fascinating caves, and throughout the forests are birds, iguanas, and howler monkeys. Playa Samara, Montezuma and Playa del Coco are all places worth investigating as well if you’re lucky enough to find yourself on the peninsula with time to meander and be amazed.

Internationally recognized for all that it has to offer, Wilson Botanical Garden brims with rare, indigenous, eye-popping species of plants. Grab a map and head out for a self-guided walk or follow a tour guide who will tell you what’s what. Either way you go, you’ll end up dwelling over medicinal herbs, colorful flowers, and an array of birds that will make binocular wearers jump for joy. If you’ve come all the way to Central America, taking in the natural landscape like this is a must.

Surfers will find Costa Rica to be a paradise, and notable places to catch a few waves include Playa Naranjo and Ollie’s Point. Seek out the famous “long lefthander” that the Golfito region is known for if you want a true challenge. Experience both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as you tour the many beaches, and be assured that non surfers will find plenty to do as well. If you’d rather not feel the pull of the tides and the crash of the waves, just sit back and take it all on from ashore.

In a matter of three hours you can go from one side of Costa Rica to the other, so in order to see as much as possible you’ll likely be moving around a bit. If you happen to pass through the capital, San Jose, be prepared for a bustling city that’s a little gritty but definitely worth exploring. Museums, theatres, shopping, and excellent food will all compete for your attention as you navigate the noisy streets that weave through skyscrapers and typical big city sights. The energy is palpable, so you may not find San Jose to be the place to achieve the ultimate feeling of relaxation, but it makes a nice contrast to your quieter escapades.

As you wander the cities taking in the language and the culture or tour the rainforest stretching your neck to view the untamed upper canopies, you’ll be glad that you’ve strayed from the beaten path to take a vacation that is out of the ordinary yet perfectly safe. As you drink refrescos (fresh fruit, sugar and water) after a day of hiking or as you stroll across a black sand beach, you’ll be torn between telling the world about your wonderful trip and keeping it your own little secret. Later you can do whatever you think is right, but be sure to enjoy the peaceful moments as they occur.

As far as where to stay while in Costa Rica, lodging options are plentiful. In the spirit of this distinctive trip, however, you may find yourself gravitating towards a vacation rental. By settling into a house or villa that captures the tropical vibe, offers great views, and provides better than average amenities like a washer and dryer, a covered porch, plenty of closet space, and long-term availability, you might be tempted to leave your old world behind and take up a new identity as a tico (local). Conveniences like being able to walk to the beach without ever feeling crammed into a boxy hotel will be key in contributing to your overall sense of happiness during this well-deserved getaway.

Costa Rica vacation rentals by owner are plentiful and sure to add a little extra something to what already looks like an incredible trip, so go online today and start seeking out the perfect place.

Located about 250 km northwest of Tahiti, Bora Bora is an exotic volcanic island in the Leeward group of the Society archipelago in French Polynesia. Founded in 1722 by Roggeveen - a Dutch navigator, Bora Bora’s history is marked by several wars held between several clans of the island.

Packed with amazing Polynesian sights, lush vegetation, and unfettered environment, Bora Bora is now truly a wonderful destination to enjoy holidays in a relaxed environment. The sheer beauty of the place is further enhanced by the incredible black peaks of Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia, which in turn provide a natural splendor to the island. But, the real glory of the island lies in its pristine beach as well as tropical sights and settings.

The island as well as its inhabitants is surrounded by an air of mysticism. An interest thing regarding the name of this island is that al though it starts with the letter ‘b’, such a letter sound does not exist in the Polynesian language.

This name is thought to have been derived from Pora Pora, literally meaning ‘firstborn.’ Another mysterious thing in connection with this island is that despite the fact that it is an exotic island blessed with a stunning marine life, there are only very few interesting sea mammals. The reason behind this is due to the volcanic nature of the island. Many of the interesting mammals found here are brought in by some navigators from Europe and other Polynesian destinations.

Bora Bora boasts of such a great number of attractions that it is quite difficult to list them all. Perhaps, the greatest of Bora Bora’s attractions is its lagoonarium, enclosed by coral reef. The lagoon serves as a perfect base to enjoy a continuum of recreational activities including boating, shark feeding, jet skiing, picnicking, and scuba diving. It also provides the services of expert divers who help you in swimming as well as come along with a range of water animals including dolphins, turtles, and numerous other water animals. In addition, there is Aquascope - a semi-submersible watercraft, exclusively for those who don’t know swimming or diving.

Another great attraction of Bora Bora is Matira Beach, which stands as a classic example of a South Pacific beach. The beach is truly a coral paradise blessed with tropical fish species. With shallow lagoons, the beach is a great destination to enjoy a plethora of activities such as snorkeling and kayaking.

Your Bora Bora vacation would be incomplete without taking a visit to the region’s ancient shrines, namely, Marae Temples. These open air shrines are believed to be the result of the island’s mystical past. Maraes were once used by the inhabitants to present the Gods with ritual foods, conducting weddings and ceremonies, and enthroning a king. One of the most important Marae temples in the region is the Marae Fare-Opu.

Other not to miss attractions in Bora Bora are Cooks Bay, Tetiaroa Atoll & Bird Sanctuary, with an exotic variety of sea birds, and Laid-back Huahine with archeological sites. Additionally, don’t miss traditional mystic dance shows of the island, such as otea - a war dance, pao’a - a sensual dance, and aparima.

Above all, Bora Bora has now become one of the sought after destinations in the world for conducting weddings as well as celebrating honeymoon. Many Americans and Japanese people including celebrities have chosen this Tahitian island as their wedding venue. The weddings are conducted here in a traditional way, with bride and groom dressed in Polynesian wedding pareos. They are accompanied by a group of musicians and dancers singing traditional Tahitian love songs. A local priest unites the couples by naming them with Tahitian names and wrapping them in a tifaifai quilt, that are specially designed for the wedding function.

Today, many of the top end hotels have come forward to provide superb packages to make your wedding ceremony in Bora Bora truly exotic as well as memorable. Apart from these, Bora Bora has accommodation choices to suit every taste and pocket. For instance, if you are looking for a unique accommodation choice, then one of the best choices would be fantastic bungalows erected directly over the water. There are also accommodation options to cater to the requirements of budget conscious travelers.

You can watch a wide variety of beautiful exotic birds at the bird’s sanctuaries of Kerala. Birds sanctuaries of Kerala have excellent moist deciduous teak forests and marshes dominated by bamboo and other grasses, most favourable environ for aerial population in India. These forests are also said to be amongst the most extensively forested belts in the Indian Peninsula housing some of the most desired homes of migratory birds in Kerala. On the travel vacations to Kerala the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, and Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary offers some of the excellent photography options.

Kerala Birds Sanctuaries

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (also commonly known as the Thattekad Sanctuary) is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar River. The sanctuary was notified in 1983 based on a recommendation made by Dr. Salim Ali many years previously. Ali described Thattekad in the 1930’s as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, comparable only with the eastern Himalayas. The reserve boasts of a variety of migratory and resident bird species, including the rare Ceylon frogmouth and the rose-billed roller.

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary lies 12km from Kottayam bordering the Vembanad Lake, and spread over 14 acres of land. This famous sanctuary is a haunt for migratory birds like darters, egrets, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoos and wild ducks amongst others. One can even get a glimpse of the Siberian storks that migrate to this place almost every year.

Florida is famous for its parks, lakes and beaches. Some of the famous parks in Florida are great for visit. These includes Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and Biscayne National Park.

Florida is a state that is located in the South-eastern region of the United States, neighboring Alabama to the northwest, and Georgia in the northeast. The majority of Florida has a humid subtropical weather, while Southern Florida has a tropical weather. Due to this kind of weather, its parks look like paradise.

There are a lot of famous national parks in Florida and these includes; the Big Cypress National Preserve, the Biscayne National Park, and the Caloosahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. These are joined with the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, the Dry Tortugas National Park, the Everglades National Park, the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the Saint Vincent National Wildlife Refuge. In this article, we will just discuss three of them namely: the Big Cypress National Preserve, the Biscayne National Park, and the Everglades National Park.

Big Cypress National Preserve

This park is a sort of preserve in the midst of the cosmic Everglades and the increasing Florida commercial and residential population. The Big Cypress is somewhat a little less distraught with tourism than its brother. With almost similar wildlife and identical climates, this well-maintained national site is a must see for tourists and adventurers. There is a wide range of activities to try on while being overwhelmed in this pristine, dense setting. You can try hiking and backpack through the thick woods that beautify the park or even glide the bogs and swamps. The venerable ecosystems are abundant with tropical birds and some other extraordinary natives, which makes kayaking or boating through the winding streams a great means to take it all in.

Biscayne National Park

Just for a quick stroll from the active and busy nightlife of Miami, the Biscayne National Park is to be found. While most of their community is recognized as a sanctuary of economic elite, this part of the shoreline is mostly a well-maintained habitat. Although the land is still very flat, the vegetation is really very thick. Here, you can discover thick forests; however you can find on the central part of the park is Biscayne Bay. This protected cove is very ideal for fishing and boating. There is also a well-established trail that leads to the lake on the mainland side.

A visitor center has been located here, very near to the blue green water’s perimeter. Camping and also snorkeling are some of the pastimes at Biscayne for families that are on vacation from the north. Even though there are some strange and unnatural views from out of the bay and that includes a huge landfill, a nuclear plant, and the distant Miami buildings, Biscayne is still is far from civilized.

Everglades National Park

The Everglades are a natural awesome sight: with lengthy patches of flat and vegetated earth in the middle of streams and marshes, a great quantity of unique natural world, and a great land, kept solely for the enlargement and richness of the ecosystems within.

There are a lot of ways to behold the park. A visitor can cross it on foot while hiking the thin paths by the side of the water, ride a canoe into the streams and trails in the midst of landmasses. Or, go fast about the bigger bodies of water riding on a fan boat. Also, be aware of the park’s natives, crocodiles and alligators are existing here, making it an exceptionally unusual occurrence.

The tropical condition of southern Florida allows the exotic birds (at about 300 of their recorded species), and the wildlife beautify the park. It has constantly grown in population since its inauguration in 1934. This park is swamped with tourism. It offers an amazing perspective of an unrestrained tropical area, untouched by man’s hand.

Mitch Endick asked:

At the same you are getting less and less sleep, your pet parrot is getting ornery and difficult to handle. Where he was once a happy camper, now your parrot is getting downright surly. You and your pet parrot are both suffering from the same problem. Not enough sleep.

The drive home was long and tiring. Arriving home you see that there are some chores to do, the kids need your attention and the boss has given you some homework. Exhausted, you notice the hour is late and if you are lucky, you might catch five or six hours of sleep. Waking the next morning you still feel tired, out of sorts and cranky.

Even the weekend brings no relief with a busy schedule of household chores and family events. It will not be long before your sleep deficient grows to the point you are always tired and in a perpetually bad mood.

During the course of the average day, we humans are bombarded by visual stimuli. Messages from television, radio, cell phones and all manner of electronic gadgetry fill our senses. Artificial lighting and seasonal changes in natural light has a profound affect on many of us. The effects of this sensory overload are well documented in both humans and animals. Not surprisingly, your pet parrot can be adversely affected by lighting and noise. Things that the average human may take for granted, might pose a problem for the average parrot, or other per bird. With a possible lifespan of over seventy years, there are certain behaviors that are deeply engrained and one is the need for sleep.

Owning a pet of any kind brings with it tremendous responsibilities. Beyond providing the basic like food water and shelter, certain animals, especially exotic pets need special attention. Depending on the species, animals, including parrots have specials needs to which humans must adapt. Think of it as a kind of reverse adaptation. Parrots in the wild live in an environment vastly different from their homebound cousins. The fact is that all parrots are wild animals and are not domesticated like dogs, cats and other types of house pets.

Your schedule and living habits may include watching late night television or leaving the lights on until you go to bed. Like humans, parrots need a certain amount of sleep. Restful sleep helps the mind refresh itself. Sleep is important to help us recuperate from the stress of the day. The same is true for parrots and other pet birds. In order to ensure that your pet is getting recuperative sleep, there are certain adaptations that you may need to make.

Pet birds are completely dependant on us for their care. Therefore, it is up to the owner of the bird to provide a proper environment that is right for the bird. Since your pet parrot may not like late night television, you may need to move the television, or the bird, to another room.

Reducing the amount of artificial light is another key to providing the bird a proper habitat. In the wild, many bird species, including parrots, will rest and sleep starting around dusk. That is far earlier than most human decide to hit the proverbial hay.

One way to reduce the birds over exposure to artificial light is to tent the birds cage or perch. These types of products are widely available through pet retailers. Keeping the noise down is another very important environmental consideration.

Allowing your bird to get a good recuperative sleep will improve his mood. Parrots are very intelligent animals and can provide us with many years of loyal companionship. It is up to us to provide everything these beauty animals need when we make them part of home and our lives.
