How do I keep birds from building a nest under the dome of my propane tank?

I’ve cleaned out several birds’ nest under the dome on my propane tank and I don’t know how to keep them out. I want to keep the opening open for venting, yet keep the birds out. I thought about chicken wire, but I’m afraid it might spark which wouldn’t be a good thing around the propane tank.
