How can I simulate exotic bird feathers (w/ paper, fabric, etc) without actually buying any?

I’m working on a sculpture and I’ll be needing upwards of 500 faux feathers. I really wanted at least three different types, one of them faux peacock feathers. However, buying that many fake feathers is just not practical (they’re incredibly expensive!).

Is there any way I could make realistic looking ‘feathers’ from paper, fabric or some other cheapish material?
